This lovely Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge 2013 shows pretty, ripe red fruits underpinned by well balanced tannins.
Nicely rounded, this red Chassagne is perfect for drinking young.
Although today Chassagne-Montrachet is known for its exceptional white wines, historically it was the reds of the region that were held in higher esteem.
The clay and sand soil over limestone is actually better suited to growing Pinot Noir than Chardonnay and, although much less common than previously, some extremely fine red Chassagne-Montrachet is still produced.
This villages example from Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard is one of them.
