Wine maker Patrick Brunel has long been regarded as one of the Southern Rhone Valley’s top producers.
Here he has excelled with this pure Syrah based red from grapes from Northern Rhone’s Crozes Hermitage appellation.
Crozes-Hermitage has the largest vineyard area of any of the northern Rhône appellations and it is located in the Drôme département on the left bank of the river.
The terraced vineyards lie just to the north of Hermitage, on similar granite soil. The name originally included only the vineyards of the town of Crozes-Hermitage, but it has spread to encompass neighbouring towns.
Traditional in style, it has big, ripe black fruit flavours with notes of eucalyptus and licorice on the palate culminating in a big, savoury finish with great length.
This is a wine that will surprise you with its elegance. The palate is soft and it delivers a beautifully typical expression of its terroir, supplying immediate pleasure if you wish to drink it now but it will easily keep for 5 or more years.
Food Match: Red meats in general but especially game. Or try tomatoes stuffed with Lamb and Olives.
