So, what is the big deal about Romania? It’s one of the oldest – and youngest – winemaking countries in the world, with a history that goes back 4000 years, but with a 40-year hiatus during the Communist era.
Did you know? The biggest wine collection in the world with over 1.5 million bottles, recorded in the Guinness Book in 2005 belongs to Moldova (Highest production of wine Per Capita in the world).
So, Romania has 6 awarded suppliers, 21 grape varieties and 85 great wines.
In fact, at the recent Chipping Steam Fair, Romanian wines were being spot lighted, so Romania is on the up and up in the UK.
Let’s take Moldova as an example of a wine region in Romania, they have now called themselves Wine of Moldova, this has united all the countries wine producers.
They have the largest cellars in the world! 67 million bottles are now exported worldwide, according to Wine of Moldova.
They have the biggest wine collection in the world boasting over 1.5 million bottles, these are stored in Gothic cases in the galleries of Milestii Mici at a depth of 80 metres beneath the ground and just 10 kilometres away from the national capital Chisinau. In fact, this makes a visit well worth while travelling by bike, car or just walk through the underground streets that make up this vast set of galleries. They welcome hundreds of thousands of guests from all over the world, go and see National Wine Day which this year is celebrated on the 6th and 7th October.
